SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859-1930) was a physician and prolific writer, but best known as the creator of the fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. He was also a Freemason. Doyle was initiated at the Phoenix Lodge No. 257 in Southsea, Hampshire.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. In 1731, Franklin became a Freemason, and in that year he edited and published James Anderson's "Constitutions of the Free-Masons," which was then the first Masonic publication in the Americas.
